It was a little chilly when we formed up at the Y
on Saturday morning, but it just kept getting nicer and nicer as the day went
on.
Mickey and his friend George were there to see us off (they were going to a UT
baseball game), as well as Ozzie.
As we headed out for Johnson City (and breakfast!) it was the following group....Tony in the '58, Roy in his Deuce roadster (of course he was in second place), Jim Smith in his Pearl Chevy, Paul (a little behind schedule, but wouldn't tell us what held him up....he just kept grinning!) in his '57, Chester in his Red Chevy, Maurice in his 3-Window Deuce. Robert Courtney, Bobby Hohmann, and myself were passengers as well a friend of Paul's.
Ron Kitchens was waiting at The Old Lumber Yard Cafe in Johnson City. The service was a little slow there, but the food was great....best pancakes I've had in a restaurant! After chow, we headed out to Fredericksburg where we picked up Harold Coates, who not only set up the visit with Tom Comforte, but was our guide as well.
Street Dreams (we visited there on a previous Hill Country tour) has moved, not far, to a beautiful showroom that is, talk about convenience, right next door to where the auction has moved (Fredericksburg Events Center). Street Dreams had some fine rides on display and a collection of 50's and 60's jukeboxes. They seem to have changed direction a little and featured more "muscle" than last time.
The auction was a dandy, with about 10 times as many cars as we used to see. Most of the cars that went across while we were there had the reserve lifted, and things were selling at decent prices. We ran into Mr. Warren Matney as well as his twin brother, and Warren's son. I think the last time I saw Warren's brother was also at the auction several years ago.
Then it was off to the boondocks, out hi-way 16, to The Knot On The Loop Cafe. This was a day for great chow and the burgers at the Knot were exceptional. Great old place with lots to look at, and very speedy service. They also had a jukebox with a great selection of tunes.
Before we could head out to Tom Comfortes place, Roy (read your e-mails Roy!) needed to gas up, so we headed down the road to Willow City (talk about an exaggeration!) and stopped at Bobby's brother's "general store" where Tony and Roy gassed up and we met Bobby's dad and brother.
Off we went to Tom Comforte's place (putting green, tennis courts, pond, beautiful old preserved Texas style log houses, and......of course, a huge garage, chock full of an eclectic collection of fine cars......Rolls Royce (with Grey Poupon mustard), Porsche, '56 Nomad, a Chevy Cameo pickup, '62 T-Bird convertible, a GTO pickup ( yeah, that's what I said.. a pickup!!) and probably the finest example of a '36 Ford 3-window coupe in the area. We had to carry Roy out of there, he wanted to stay and pet the '36!
If you ever find yourself in the Hill Country near
Fredericksburg or Johnson City and are looking for one fine cruise, take the
trouble to find hi-way 1323....................well worth the trouble.
All in all, one FINE day. What did you do?
