Do you ever think about cars while having sex ?
Well, I’m here to tell ya that the LoneStar Roundup will do that to you. What a
weekend it was – just could NOT think about anything else but CARS !
Lets see now – the weekend started way early with a party at Crushproof – a
local hot rod and muscle car builder on Wed. evening. Thursday Noon found some
of us at a “Pre LoneStar Roundup” BBQ hosted by Reggie – one of the Kontinentals
at his warehouse for some of his cars. I got to ride out to Reggie’s in Roy’s 40
Ford Hauler – and let me tell you that it is a blast riding along with our buddy
Roy sitting behind a hood full of louvers ! I’ll bet that more than 100 cars
showed up for the BBQ – a very good turnout indeed.
On Thursday evening Mark G (the Donut Gang event “Prez” for the Roundup) hosted a party and Open House at his “Tiki Palace” car shop where approximately 100 people showed up and a GREAT time was had by all.
Now on
Friday morning the weather got pretty darn bad - there were severe
thunderstorm warnings, tornado warnings, very heavy rain, lightning storms,
probably a tsunami or two - - and even a UFO sighting (or was that one of the
custom rods rolling into town? ) Anyway, none of this stopped ole Donut Mark
from hosting the Friday morning “Pre LoneStar Garage Crawl” where more than 25
rods and customs drove all over Austin and the surrounding areas checking out
both Hot Rod shops and personal car collection shops as well. I heard quite a
bit of feedback Saturday at the show about how good the crawl was. Way to go
Mark !
Some of us went on out to the Expo Center on Friday to check out the Roundup and
to watch the cars start rolling in. We also got to do a little preview of their
first annual Swap Meet.
Friday night most of the Donuts and wives met at Doc’s on South Congress where Mark had made us dinner (and parking) reservations. This is either the second or third year in a row we have done this – and it works out really well. The food is pretty good – and you just can’t beat the location – right in the middle of things on South Congress….where you can do a lot of Hot Rod and people watching. By the way – the “Oz Man” was there – and was his typical low key – quiet and reserved self.
Saturday a lot of us made our way back out to the Expo Center where there were over 700 cars registered for the show. There was just about everything you could want – billet rods, lots of rust on the ground at the swap meet, several pin strippers where Stan got lines laid down on his mighty fine 50 Merc, a tribute to Gary Howard, multiple bands playing throughout the day and lots and lots of “traditional” style hot rods. Saturday night was back down to South Congress for some MAJOR avenue cruising and then on to the Garage Party at South Austin Speed Shop.
It just doesn’t get much better boys. I’m already looking forward to next years event - - how about ya’ll ?
