It was indeed a fine outing!! A little early at the Y to meet up (6:45) but
for a change, we left close to on time.
By the time we hit Marble Falls and the Bluebonnet Cafe for a fine
complimentary breakfast (Thanks to David Horner at Restoration Specialties) we
had the following Donuts and guests: Stan and his beat up old Merc,
Chester in his red, red Chevy coupe, Jim Greene in the recently finished
Chevelle with Billy Brisco (who works at SRF), Jim Smith in the Pearl coupe,
Lee Wood in his multi-year Mercury convertible, Tony Adsley in his down in the
dirt Impala, Jim Newton (and his pal who's name has escaped me) in his Chevy
sedan, Bill Ward in some kind of plastic car, Warren Matney riding with Tony,
Mark Gustafson and dad, Bill in Marks primer pickup, Ozzie Wagner in his fine
Chevy Sedan, Dan Brinkman in the other Impala, Paul Brault in his Three
Window, Roy Reeves in the black hiboy, Art Smith (no rain in sight) in his
fine '56, Maurice Allen in his Red Deuce (did he really let Paul drive it???),
Ken McDonald in another plastic car, Jeff Alder in the music to your ears
Deuce coupe, and me, along with Jalopy Joe, in the Too Low T-Bird. We were
accompanied by Jimmy Fingers in his mean sounding El Camino, Mike Campbell in
his waaay tooo coool full fendered Deuce, and Rayford Reese in his nice Merc
(or maybe a Lincoln?).
The first stop was a used car lot east of Marble Falls with gob and gobs of
nice old 4-doors. There were a ton of huge cars from the '60's and a few from
the '50's and earlier. But they were mostly 4 door which kept enthusiasm to a
minimum.
Next, it was off to Marble Falls Upholstery where there was a pretty fine '34
in the works.
After that we headed out to Restoration Specialties new digs, (David says they
had 3,000 sq. feet at the old place compared to 10,000 sq ft here), and what a
nice change it was. A showroom (they didn't have one before) had five or six
finished rods, and in the under progress area, there was a collection of rods
being built to boggle the mind!
Then we headed over to Rayford's (one of his garages!) garage for a look at
just a portion of his collection. Man, does he have some great stuff!! That's
where we saw that '50's style shoebox Ford (with the exhaust coming out of the
bumper guards), and a very eclectic collection of other stuff. Rayford says he
doesn't look for anything in particular, but strikes when something catches
his fancy.
Then we stopped by Mike Campbells new place for a look around. Brand new
building and a few of Mike's fine rides on display. Mike was our guide
throughout the day, and a big thanks to him for keeping us all eyes wide open.
The last stop (for a few of us) was Opie's Bar-B-Q for some good stuff (Stan
is STRONG!).
Boys, it was a good one!
